Church of Saint Anne Parish Religious Education Program (PREP)
"...I gave my students a saying to say. 'I am somebody. I was somebody when I came. I'll be a better somebody when I leave. I am powerful, and I am strong. I deserve the education that I get here."-Rita Pierson
7th Grade Faith Formation
Working alongside my brother for the past three years (and counting) has given me a new perspective on diversity in the classroom. The largest margin of diversity is found in the socioeconomic demographic. Many of our students come from Simle Middle School, a school that has 22% of its students on free and reduced meal plans. With the majority of our 7th grade students coming from Simle, one can conclude that the low SES community is prevalent in our classrooms. |
Lessons Outside of Instruction
The students in this program have infectious energy, a desire to learn, and are easily influenced. But the students are not the only learners in this setting. This program, in many specific situations, has taught me what I have been learning during my professional development courses for the past three years; I never know what a student experiences outside the school setting. To read more about specific stories and circumstances, I invite you to please read my Diversity Practicum Capstone paper, found in the link below. |
